Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts, Local Government and Community Development, Premila Kumar has reminded heads of schools in the Western Division on the importance of having a Disaster Management Plan within the school system.

According to the Fijian Government, minister Kumar visited Ba Special School, Ba Muslim Primary School, Rakiraki Muslim Primary School, Saint Francis College and Barotu Early Childhood Centre yesterday and commended the resilience and the proactiveness of the Heads of schools and teachers.

Having a disaster management plan should help school administration and teachers prepare for a disaster. It should outline what needs to be done in the event of a disaster, such as moving school belongings to higher ground.

The visit provided an opportunity for the teachers and the school management to discuss future plans for their schools in ensuring that their schools are protected from future floods.
