Maria Madigibuli, 50, was among 30 women and girls awarded the Westpac Women and Girls Education Grant 2020.
She said the fund would assist her complete her law studies at the University of the South Pacific.
“I am so relieved now as this scholarship can be used to pay for my second year units,” she said.
“There are not any words to describe how grateful I am to Westpac and I applaud them for empowering women by giving us this completion as a means to fulfil higher education that is usually shelved for good because we become mothers and wives from an early age.”
She said education was important.
“I hope to inspire other women that we should dare to go for those goals that seemed unreachable, unachievable.”
In a statement, Westpac Fiji stated they were pleased to support a diverse group of women and girls striving to reach their educational aspirations.
“At Westpac, we encourage lifelong learning and our grant recipients include mature students who have chosen to further their education and expand their career prospects,” the statement read.
“The grant program was set up a decade ago by Westpac to support equal opportunity for women and girls through education, acknowledging the challenges they face in completing education or taking up advanced studies.”
The Westpac Women and Girls Education grant is an annual program whereby students at various levels of studies are required to submit an essay, video or poster on given topics.
