THE first external examination for high school students started yesterday around the country. Year 13 students sat for their first exam papers yesterday.

The Ministry of Education, Heritage and Arts, confirmed a total of 8452 students would be sitting for their exams within the next two weeks.

Students, it stated, would be using 163 examination centres around the country for the exams.

Education Minister Rosy Akbar who was chief guest at Yat Sen Secondary School in Suva, encouraged Year 13 students to work hard, reminding them about the need for them to carry Fiji forward in the future.

Again, today we have an opportunity to encourage support for the education system.

As parents and guardians, we should support students and encourage them to study and do their best.

We should encourage our students to be focused on their performance and head to school with confidence.

Let’s remind our children that there are opportunities to secure a better future for themselves.

We must tell them how education can factor in that long-term dream.

They should be told that getting a good education can be fulfilling as well as rewarding.

A United Nations regional overview on East Asia and the Pacific in 2011, titled Education For All Global Monitoring Report stated that parents and guardians play a critical role in the education process.

The linguistic, cognitive and social skills children develop through early childhood care and education are the foundations for expanded life chances and for lifelong learning.

The report suggested that once children were enrolled at the right age, the challenge was to get them through school.

That is why we must play our part in ensuring our children receive the education they need.

This is the part of the term when exams are held.

This is the business end of the school year.

This is when students will reflect on all they have learnt, and test themselves to see how well they understood their teachers and what was taught in the classroom.

This term is about setting priorities.

Let’s face it, not every student will be good in school.

Students must be willing to make a difference though.

They must be willing to give this term their best shot. We should be nurturing a sense of enthusiasm, commitment and dedication to make a difference in their lives.

Let us talk about setting goals and work towards them.

Let us be supportive.

For the students, take time to read your questions properly before doing anything else on exam day.

We wish every student around the country the very best.
