Breast cancer survivor Adi Menani Vukivuki believes early detection is the key to surviving the deadly disease that has claimed the lives of millions of women across the globe.

The Malevu villager from Yasawa says after discovering that she had a lump in her left breast in 2017, she travelled from her village in Naviti to Suva where she sought treatment immediately.

“I was at home in the village and I had been listening to the radio when a woman was encouraging us to get ourselves checked,” she said.

“She was saying if you find a lump anywhere in your breast, you should go to your nearest hospital and get checked.

“That advice has always been in the back of my mind and in 2017, I felt a lump.

“I didn’t waste any time and made my way to Suva where they diagnosed me with breast cancer.

“I’m very grateful to God that I was able to find the lump in time.

“As a result they had to remove my left breast and I’m still healthy until this day.”

She said her time spent at the Fiji Police Force also helped her cope with the challenges brought on by the debilitating disease.

“I must say I learnt discipline. It helped stay on course and remain faithful that I would survive it. This was one of the reasons I am a breast cancer survivor.

“I thank the Lord that I started off as a police officer because it gave me the heart to keep fighting. “I’m 74 now and I am still here.”

She said other women should take heed of the advice of medical professionals.

“I think every woman should make it a point to get checked.

“They should seek advice and make use of the medical resources available to us. “It can save your life.”
