NEWLY signed Aussie Rules player William Dyer is looking forward to stamp his mark in the Australian Football League.

The 21-year-old from Bau, Tailevu, was signed by the Coreen Daysdale Hopefield Buraja United (CDHBU) Club in Melbourne and is set to begin his professional AFL career in 2020.

Dyer was part of the Western Force AFL club that took home the 2019 Vanua Cup Challenge last month.

The Bau, Tailevu native was also an important member of the Lautoka Raiders AFL Football Club from Navutu. He said Aussie Rules had changed his life over the past 18 months.

“I never dreamt that I would be where I am today,” he said.

“My upbringing wasn’t really good. I was not an easy person to raise. “I was always in the wrong crowds.

“But ever since I started playing this game and I saw the opportunities that it had, I committed myself to it. “I trained when I need to train and most importantly I listened.

“I did not want to do anything that could lead to me losing this opportunity.”

Dyer had travelled to Melbourne earlier this year with Nadi Panthers club recruit Jeke Koroi for a six-month trial run with CDHBU.

The pair made an impression during their short stint. Western Force coach Luke Snow said Dyer and Koroi were offered a three-year contract before their return to Fiji.

“We are very proud of their achievements,” he said. “It gives the rest of the boys something to work towards and aim for.”
