Dutch water experts here to support resilience against floods

A team of Dutch water experts will work with the Ministry of Waterways and Environment and aims to support the Ministry to further strengthen its flood management activities and better coordinate interventions for Fiji.

The is being deployed in Fiji to support resilience against floods and to help mitigate consequences of floods in the Ba and Rakiraki catchments.

The Dutch DRR team will contribute to understanding the flood risk factors in the Ba and Rakiraki catchments and through informed recommendations would pave the way for holistic flood management in Fiji.

Minister for Agriculture, Rural and Maritime Development, Waterways and Environments Dr Mahendra Reddy in a statement today said mitigating flood is a priority where floods cause a huge amount of social and economic loss in the country.

“It is time now that we move away from being reactive to flood disasters to actually implementing specific activities aimed at mitigating flood risks”, he said.

Dr Reddy reiterated the need to further our resilience to floods through strategically informed interventions.
