Duo take on acting roles in Fiji Rugby: call for fresh blood

THE Fiji Rugby Union board has decided to give the acting chief executive officer position to coach assessor Sale Sorovaki while the finalisation of the post is ongoing.

Sorovaki will be in the role until a suitable candidate is found.

Also, long-serving board member Daniel Whippy will act in the chairman position until the annual general meeting later this year. Whippy has been on the board for two terms and is going on for a third term.

Meanwhile, the interim appointment was not well received by former sports and youth minister Rajesh Singh. He said with the acting chairman position, Whippy had done his term as stipulated in the FRU constitution for two terms.

“As per Section 38 (2) of the FRU constitution, board members can only serve for two terms (eight years). Unfortunately Whippy has been there since 2013,” he said.

“But I think his appointment falls on the end part of the constitution which says ‘if the members of the company so decide that a board director continues after the initial two terms, then the directors will continue to serve until the members so decide’,” Singh said.

“But at the same time, I saw Whippy has done his term two times, and now I think he should retire because it’s 10 years he’s been on the board.

“People have been given two terms, he’s done what he can do. Now, you need a new brain, and new ideas for the board to take it to another level It’s time for the current board to retire to get new, fresh blood.

“Give somebody four years and if they don’t perform, get another person.

“Simply, they’ve been there for years nothing has been done. I can’t see anything.”

He said for Sale, he had respect for the Kadavu man who he called tauvu.

“Sorovaki is more into rugby development, manager training coaches is good, but CEO, as I said, has to have a direct approach on what he does,” Singh said. “Honestly, I just want to bring in Tuiloa (Tevita) to the system.

“There should be someone, who has the brain to run a business organisation like the FRU. “You need that guy with a commercial-oriented mind that can make contract set-up.

“You see Tuiloa was acting for three months and he has done really well.

“And the good thing about him is like he was not scared of the board. He speaks his mind out like Jerry’s (Tuwai) house and players’ contracts.

“So this is the kind of young man we need.”

He said young people were needed in those kind of set-ups.

Tuiloa was asked to step down by the board given that he had applied for the CEO position.
