AFTER 17 years New Zealand-based Burty Molia and Australian-based Ryan Fong are back together as a pair to reclaim the gold medal that they won in 2003 during the South Pacific Games in Suva.
The badminton duo made an effort to attend the last trial for badminton and after one and a half decade, that they still manage to make the team to Samoa for the Pacific Games.
Molia 43, resides in New Zealand said to be back together and represent Fiji in badminton brings a lot of memories.
“We’ve played in the doubles since high school in 1991 at Marist Brothers High School and also in the 2003 South Pacific Games in Suva and now we are back 17 years later for one final attempt for a gold for team Fiji,” said Molia.
“We have a young side and I know we will give our best for our nation.”
Fong 42, said he wanted to win a medal for Fiji for one last time before he retired from international career in badminton.
“I was 16 years old and Burty was 17 when we won gold in the badminton men’s double and after that we both went to New Zealand and I moved to Australia later but we kept on playing back where we live and we thought of coming for the trials for one last attempt to represent Fiji,” said Burty.
“This will be my last competition for Fiji and I will give my best with Burty to win a medal for our country,” said Fong.
