FIJI’S Online Safety Act will come into effect on January 1 next year, Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum confirmed.

The Act establishes the Online Safety Commission.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the commission would be headed by FijiFirst candidate Anne Dunn who will be its commissioner.

He said the main objective of the commission was to promote responsible online behaviour and online safety, promote a safe online culture and environment that addressed cyberbullying, cyberstalking, internet trolling and exposure to offensive or harmful content particularly in respect of children, deter harm caused to individuals by electronic communications and provide efficient means of redress for such individuals.

He says the commission will promote online safety, organise awareness and education programs including the provision of online safety materials, receive complaints, investigate complaints, consult and work with various agencies and fulfil the functions within the Act itself.

Ms Dunn said the main idea of the commission was to be able to promote and assist online safety.

“The commission is here to help and is here to promote and advocate and raise awareness on online safety,” she said.

The office will be situated at level 9 at the Suvavou House.

Parliament this year approved the Online Safety Act which Government had brought about.
