The Fiji Taxi Association has sought the assistance of the Fiji Police Force and the Land Transport Authority in its bid to curb allegations of Fijian public service drivers involved in drug-related activities.

Association president Raben Singh said the issue was “alarming” and there was a need to remove such drivers from being engaged in public service.

“We have written a letter to the LTA chief executive and the Fiji police special branch to look into the issue which is a very worrying one,” Mr Singh said.

“We have been talking about this same issue from three years ago; however, some drivers continue to take advantage of their position as public service drivers and ignore simple advice we give them.

“It is about time they are dealt with because it seems all our plea and advice to them are falling on deaf ears.”

Mr Singh said they pleaded with the LTA to cancel the permits and the driving licences of drivers found guilty of being involved in such drug-related activities.

Police recently took a 45-year-old taxi driver into custody after a raid conducted at his home resulted in the seizure of apparatus and equipment allegedly used to produce hard drugs as well as smoking apparatuses, electronic items and foreign currencies.

“We are very concerned about the behaviour of these drivers; do keep in mind that you will be caught one way or the other so refrain from being involved in drug-related activities or you will lose your licence forever,” Mr Singh added.
