Ba Town Council special administrator Anil Amin says “dredging of the Ba River needs to be carried out as soon as possible” to prevent future flooding.

He said this after the town area was engulfed with floodwaters yet again this week.

Mr Amin said they had spoken to Waterways Minister Vatimi Rayalu about the issue.

“We’ve informed him that the dredging of the Ba River needs to be carried out as soon as possible so that we can address this problem,” the Ba special administrator said.

He said the council was working closely with businesses to get them operational again once the weather cleared.

“For now, individual businesses are doing their own clean up as we continue to monitor the weather.

“For council, we want to make sure that all the amenities are cleaned including the market.”

Mr Amin said they were hoping to work with the National Fire Authority to get the market clean and vendors back to their stalls.

“A lot of them are worried because the longer the market is closed the longer they will be away from their business.

“But in the long term we hope that we can engage with government and get the flooding issue addressed.”

Floodwaters entered the town as early as 3am Monday forcing the town and businesses to close for most of the day.
