Former Vodafone Cup champions Saru Dragons has booked its spot in the final play-offs after a powerful performance, winning 40- 18 over the West Coast Storm during round eight of the Fiji National Rugby League’s 2020 Vodafone Cup Western State rugby league competition at Prince Charles Park in Nadi on Saturday.

The side after a year’s nonappearance have been the surprise package in the local rugby league circles and are confident of lifting the prestigious trophy when the competition concludes on November 28.

Team manager Seremaia Koroi said the team was in high spirits and looking forward to the quarter-finals.

“There were some changes to the team from last week and it paid dividends,” he said.

“I am happy that the boys executed the game-plan and were disciplined in their approach towards the match.

“The whole community is supporting the team and we will take each match as it comes.

“We are confident of a successful campaign but we will not look over our opponents next week.

“Any team comes across and we will do the talking on the field of play.” The Netava Rarokoliwa-captained side had too much fire-power for a young Savunawai, Votualevu-based West Coast Storm brigade scoring a total of seven tries and landing four successful conversions.

Esira Dokoni opened the scoring in the first 60-seconds of the match. The Tavakubu-based outfit led 18-12 at half-time.

Saru Dragons will play Namoli West Tigers, who are languishing at the bottom of the points ladder.

Saru Dragons has amassed a total of 12 points and is in the topfour of the points ladder. The final round of games would be held on Friday next week at Prince Charles Park in Nadi before the top four teams from the East and West battle in the quarterfinals.

The FNRL Vodafone Cup quarter-finals would be held at Churchill Park in Lautoka in a fortnight.
