Dr Kumar: Withholding investigation report is an ‘act of betrayal’

A SENIOR lecturer at the University of the South Pacific (USP) says the university council’s decision to not make public a report on investigations into allegations of mismanagement is an “act of betrayal”.

Economics lecturer Dr Sunil Kumar has come out strongly saying the issue is a matter of concern because it involved the alleged abuse of public resources.

“I think the staff and the public at large have been betrayed by the (Parliamentary Standing Committee on Social Affairs) committee and the council because the council should take that responsibility and the committee should have responded to compile the report in a way that it could be made public,” Dr Kumar said.

“I feel that staff like myself and many others are concerned about the situation.

“It is totally unfair to the public in general because public resources had been used.”

Dr Kumar said the report must be released as a public document.

“It is time the council relook at its own structures and such issues should be handled in a way that the public can also be informed of the matter.”
