Vaccine certification remains an entry requirement to Fiji, Ministry of Health permanent secretary Dr James Fong said.

He said this in response to queries on why the Ministry of Health was continuing with the compulsory vaccination requirement for those wanting to travel to Fiji.

Meanwhile, Savusavu resident Elayne Bennett claimed Fiji was the only South Pacific country where a vaccine card was required for travel at this time.

“Vanuatu, Samoa, Cook Islands, Tahiti, Australia and New Zealand have all been fully open for some weeks or months now with zero Covid-19 requirements for all travellers and 115 other major world countries are also open fully.

“Why does Fiji remain stubbornly different?

“We have reached our herd immunity target many months ago and even went beyond it into the 90th percentiles.

“If the vaccine is working, then there is surely no risk to those who chose to be vaccinated.” Ms Bennett said she had chosen not to take the ‘mRNA vaccine’ and did not agree with this medical intervention.

“I cannot think of any logical or scientific reasoning that underlies the continuance of the vaccine requirement to travel for the healthy.

“It is time for us all to enjoy the same freedoms again to be able to travel to see family, and for me, my son who is my sole remaining living family member.

“I believe as a Fijian citizen and member of the public, that it is time for the vax card requirement to be made obsolete, especially for citizens who are healthy, with no medical history.”
