Health Ministry permanent secretary Dr James Fong says one of his biggest concerns is the vulnerability of Fijians with non-communicable diseases to COVID-19.

“These medical conditions – like diabetes and hypertension  contribute to higher rates of mortality from COVID-19,” he said during a media conference on Thursday.

“Many of these Fijians were among the first we vaccinated.

“But until all of these Fijians are fully-vaccinated, we have to take extreme precautions to protect them, especially those living within areas of concern.”

Dr Fong said to make sure Fijians with NCDs continued to access life-sustaining medication, they had established a telehealth system that would open for the Western and Central divisions from next Monday.

He said the service would be available Monday to Friday from 9am until 4pm.

“The number is 165. If you need access to your NCDs’ treatment medication, please call us from Monday next week.”
