Lautoka moved up to second position in the Digicel Premier League (DPL) points table after defeating Labasa 2-1 at Churchill Park yesterday.

The Blues now have 28 points, two points behind leader Rewa.

Ilisoni Lolaivalu opened the scoring for the northerners in the fourth minute against Lautoka.

Saula Waqa equalised for the hosts in the 16th minute.

The two teams were locked 1-all at halftime.

Sairusi Nalaubu scored from close range to put the home side up by a goal in the 54th minute.

Lautoka coach Shalen Lal said the hot conditions did not favour the two teams, but winning three points was a positive result.

“After conceding the early goal, the message to the boys was to hold on to possession,” he said.

“The boys regrouped and organised themselves after being a goal down. The game was for 90 minutes, but we missed many opportunities.

“We could have scored more goals. We need to work more on more of the finishing.”

Labasa coach Ravneel Pratap said Lautoka played well and they deserved their victory.

“It was an even game,” Pratap said.

“We created opportunities, but the finishing let us down.”

In other results, Ba and Nadi played to a one-all draw and Nasinu downed Navua 2-0.
