SINGING Silent Night to the children of St Christopher’s Home in Nakasi took Seaman Caitlin Pascoe, a deckhand on the US Coast Guard Cutter (USCGC) Munro, down memory lane.

“I loved it. I used to do missionary work in high school, and it made me miss outreach and being with people in the community,” Ms Pascoe said.

Ms Pascoe and the crew of Munro spent time cleaning the compound, clearing overgrown trees and even fixed a broken fence.

The visit was among activities organised by the US Embassy Suva for the crew of Munro.

The second activity was a beach clean-up outside in Lami along the foreshore beside Tikaram Park.

Two members of the crew worked with Lami Town Council staff including the chief executive officer.

Petty officer 3rd Class Carli Carnes said it was an awesome experience getting to talk to the people.

“I love interacting with the community here. It was a blast. When berthed in Suva, our US crew pride themselves on giving back to communities in whichever way they can and are grateful for the experience in Fiji.”

Close to 500kg of rubbish was collected during the clean-up.
