Teachers and students of Batibalavu District School in Cakaudrove organised a double celebration event to mark Fiji Day and the great achievement of the Fijiana rugby team at the Olympic Games in Japan.
The one-day event was celebrated at Vakativa Village where the Fijiana team captain Rusila Nagasau hails from.
The event started with a march through the village led by Rusila’s parents Lino and Vinaisi Roqica who displayed a banner that portrayed photos of the Olympic Fijiana team.
Organising committee co-ordinator Marica Roqica described the event as a successful one.
“This is the first time for us to celebrate Fiji Day in the village and also to mark the successful performance of the Fijiana team led by a villager from Vakativa,” she said.
“Rusila Nagasau has made us all proud and we are grateful to her for achieving great results and leading her team into the Olympic Games.
“This event was also used to have an awareness program for our students, especially during this COVID-19 break.
“We are reminding parents and students to continue with the study program given to them by the teachers and we will assist in whatever way we can.”
The turaga ni yavusa Drakaniwai Lino Roqica, who is also Rusila’s dad, said the teachers have done a great job.
“We have a weekly program with the teachers and I thank them for giving their time to come to the village and teach our children their lessons,” he said.
“Three times a week the children gather in their different grades in different houses and a teacher attends to their classes.
“The support from parents has been great and it’s all for the sake of giving our children better opportunities in life to achieve their dreams.”
