AFTER witnessing patients using torn curtains as linen and the shortage of adult diapers, the Labasa business community has stepped in to assist the Labasa Hospital.
Among the donors is well-known businessman and The People’s Alliance party candidate for the 2022 General Election, Charan Jeath Singh.
He made a pledge to provide $1000 worth of adult diapers for patients.
The owner of Ethan’s Coffee Heaven Shareena Madhwan also gave about $1000 towards the same cause.
Other business operators from around the country have also given to the Vu-Care Foundation, a newly formed group aimed at directly assisting those in need.
Speaking at the foundation’s first fundraiser held at Gurbachan Singh Swimming Pool, Mr Singh said they were ready to aid the most needy.
“I met a woman in Nakelikoso here in Macuata and she told me that when her mother was admitted, she had to buy diapers but she couldn’t afford it,” he said.
Foundation president Amelia Simmons said when her father was admitted in hospital, she saw how patients struggled to buy adult diapers and some used torn curtains as linen.
She said the first fundraising drive held over the weekend was to raise money to buy adult diapers and linen for the men’s and women’s wards at the Labasa Hospital.
“We did very well and I am grateful to all those who helped us make this first project a success. All diapers and linen will be purchased and donated to the hospital executives,” she said.
“All this started after my dad was admitted and I was given a long list to buy including linen and diapers, and I saw many patients couldn’t afford it so I shared with them.
“This fundraising drive will definitely help the patients.”
