Doctor testifies in rape trial

A doctor who medically examined a 12-year-old girl allegedly raped by her step-father informed the High Court in Suva yesterday that she noticed injuries on the victim’s private parts.

The 29-year-old stepfather, who is charged with one count of rape, is standing trial before High Court judge Justice Thushara Rajasinghe for the alleged offence which took place on May 6, last year.

Dr Elvira Ongbit of the Medical Services Pacific clinic said the injuries were visible on the victim’s private part, which could only result from sexual intercourse.

The victim also took the witness stand in a closed court sitting on Monday.

Yesterday, the accused opted to exercise his right and remained silent after he was consulted by his counsel, Filimoni Vosarogo on whether he opted to take the witness stand.

Mr Vosarogo said the defence preferred to tender in the caution interview as part of its evidence.

Justice Rajasinghe will sum up the case to the three assessors today.
