IT is sad to hear reports of doctors and medical professionals who are rude or perceived to be uncaring in their dealing with patients, says Minister for Health and Medical Services Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete.

Speaking during the induction of 82 doctors at the Novotel Suva Lami Bay conference centre in Lami yesterday, Dr Waqainabete reminded them that teamwork was essential.

“There will be times when you are confronted by a patient who is unreasonable, argumentative or simply unpleasant, but you must remain calm and professional,” he said.

Dr Waqainabete urged doctors to show respect for those around them at all times.

He said there was a need for doctors to be proactive. “If you see a colleague behaving inappropriately or practising unsafely, you should confront them.

“If you come across something that needs repairing, it is your duty to report it — not just to assume somebody else will do so.

“So, I ask you please treat your patients, your colleagues and your working environment with care and respect.

“Our work can, quite literally, be a matter of life or death. “As you go about your work, wherever you may be posted, it is vital that you retain the essential humanity, and humility, which have been the hallmarks of our profession for centuries.”
