The Fijian Elections Office yesterday issued a notice under the Electoral Act 2014 to The People’s Alliance party official Lynda Tabuya to remove or correct a social media post where she claimed that on March 4 a team from FEO had facilitated registration for members of the public at a school premises.

In a statement, FEO said the social media post was incorrect, misleading and false.

“In directing Ms Tabuya to remove such post, the Supervisor of Elections, Mr Mohammed Saneem, has also highlighted that should she fail to do so immediately, she will be referred to Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption for further investigation and necessary legal action including charges. The penalty for failing to comply with the directive is five years imprisonment or $50,000,” the statement read.

In response, Ms Tabuya said any accusation against their party and her as an individual was simply untrue.

“I’m asking him (Mr Saneem) to reconsider his decision and decide in the best interest of the public where he can set up separate facilities at the school location if he’s concerned about COVID restrictions,” she said.

“He owes a duty of care to the public to make the services of the FEO as accessible as possible.”

In her social media post, Ms Tabuya claimed after much lobbying and raising the issue, she thanked Mr Saneem for reconsidering the school venues and allowing members of the public to register at a school in Lautoka and that FEO staff had accommodated students, staff and the public.
