DIABETIC patient Robert Ratnam actually cried during the launching of the government subsidy on dialysis treatment at the Labasa Hospital last week.
During an interview yesterday, the eldest patient at the Labasa dialysis centre said the launching spelt financial freedom for patients like him who spent $150 for treatment twice a week.
“My two sons used to help me foot the bill, I am glad that the price has been dropped because this will be a big relief for them and their families,” he said.
“When I look back, I have already spent close to $10,000 for the last four years on treatment alone.
“As a retired security officer I have spent most of my Fiji National Provident Fund money on my treatment.”
Mr Ratnam said life for him had not been easy, adding that the community of Vunika outside Labasa Town where he resided used to raise funds for his treatment.
