PEOPLE residing in informal settlements in four areas of Lautoka can soon have development leases, Local Government Minister Parveen Kumar confirmed.

“For informal settlements, we have successfully obtained development leases from the iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB),” he said.

“This is in consultation with the landowners to formalise all these informal settlements, namely Tavakubu, Tomuka, Field 4 and Lovu Seaside and there are more settlements that will come later on.”

He said the whole idea of formalising the settlements was to provide residents with better facilities and services.

“This is to provide them with better facilities in terms of roads, in terms of water reticulation and in terms of electricity. This is what we intend to do and also give them at the same time land tenure.

“At the moment, if they want to build a new home, they cannot access the $10,000 grant Government has because they don’t have a lease.

“They can only access the grant provided they have a lease. So this is why we are going in full force to assist people in terms of building houses.”

He said after the subdivision process occurs in these settlements, residents who already live there would get the first chance.
