Ratu Meli Derenalagi has been handed the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua captain’s armband for the second season of the Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific competition.

The 24-year-old from Nawaka has come through the Fiji Rugby Union age group level from captaining the national under-20 team and the national 7s side.

Fijian Drua head coach Mick Byrne said Derenalagi was doing a great job.

“He is a good young leader,” Byrne said.

“Meli has good respect amongst the players.

He has a professional attitude which is really good.

“There will be one captain who leads the ship.”

The Fijian Drua will kick off its 2023 Super Rugby Pacific competition on February 26 against Moana Pasifika in Auckland.

Byrne said the attitude of the players in camp had been great.

“With the facilities that we have it is an enjoyable place to come,” he said.

“They have got flogged at some stage but they still have some inspiration to be here.

“The players are great and they have never been fitter than before.”
