ONE of the reasons why teenagers opt to suicide as a means to their solution is because of teen depression.

This was the view of Medical Services Pacific counselor and coordinator social services Kelera Batibasaga on the recent teenage suicide cases.

Ms Batibasaga said people needed to understand that teenagers faced a lot of pressure from the changes of puberty to questions about who they were and where they fitted in.

She added that with all this “turmoil and uncertainty”, it was not always easy to differentiate between normal teenage growing pains and depression.

Ms Batibasaga explained that parents love, guidance and support could go a long way towards helping teenagers overcome depression and getting their life back on track.

“If parents are unaware of the importance of their support and understanding during this phase of their children’s life then it can be one of the biggest contributing factor to children opting for suicide as a means to their solution,” she said.
