The Fijian Immigration Department is working on modernising Fiji’s border security and travel facilitation in response to COVID-19 said acting director for Fijian Immigration Department, Amelia Komaisavai.
She made the comment at the launching of a project to strengthen migration governance in Fiji through enhancing Fiji’s border management capacity by the International Organization for Migration and the Fijian Immigration Department on Friday.
“I acknowledge IMO’s continued support and contribution towards the Fijian Immigration Department in terms of implementing and strengthening Fiji’s border management capacity,” she said.
She said the partnership could not have come at a better time.
“With the impact of COVID-19 on the economy, this project will greatly assist the department in developing broad management capability to assist the economic recovery while at the same time considering the nation’s security as a COVID secure nation.”
She said the two-year project will focus on a range of initiatives and capacity building programs.
“This I believe will surely complement the department’s current efforts of modernising its services. The department understands the important role it plays and its contribution to Fiji’s recovery efforts.”
The project is supported by the IOM Development Fund.
