FIJI has a demand for aged-care workers.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations Parveen Kumar made the comments in Nadi on Friday night at the graduation of 43 caregivers.

Twenty of the graduates obtained certificates and 23 graduated with Diploma in Live-in Caregivers from the Nadi based Care-givers Training Institute.

Mr Kumar said more caregivers would be needed in Fiji in the future.

“As aging population grow globally, more and more of our elderly citizens are moving into aged-care-homes. With the transition to modern family networks, the old welfare networks for the elderly, unfortunately has become a thing of the past,” he said.

“No matter how hard we try to return to that past, the complexities of modern living means, that we must increasingly rely on caregivers to look after our elderly.”
