FIJI has a demand for aged care workers.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations Parveen Kumar made the comments in Nadi on Friday night at the graduation of 43 caregivers.

Twenty of the graduates obtained certificates and 23 graduated with diploma in Live-in Caregivers from the Nadi-based Caregivers Training Institute.

Mr Kumar said more caregivers would be needed in Fiji in the future.

“As ageing population grow globally, more and more of our elderly citizens are moving into aged-care homes. With the transition to modern family networks, the old welfare networks for the elderly, unfortunately has become a thing of the past,” he said.

“No matter how hard we try to return to that past, the complexities of modern living means that we must increasingly rely on caregivers to look after our elderly.”

He also told the graduates he had a meeting with caregivers employers from Australia recently and it was possible they would be taking caregivers from Fiji to work there.
