THE Government’s new e-passport that was expected to be rolled out on Monday has been delayed.

It was earlier announced that on August 26 the new e-passport will be launched, however, because of the latest features and the new system the department will organise familiarisation training for the authorities, which will take about seven to 10 working days before the e-passport is issued.

Fiji’s director of Immigration Nemani Vuniwaqa said at a press conference yesterday that Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama would launch the e-passport.

“It is very unfortunate that due to some logistical issues from our suppliers we were not able to deliver the launching of the e-passport on time, but I would like to assure the members of the public that it will still happen,” Mr Vuniwaqa said.

The e-passport is expected to be rolled out on the first week or mid-September.

Mr Vuniwaqa said at this stage, there were about 9000 pending passport applications.

The packages are expected to reach our shores tomorrow.

This new system focuses on strengthening border security and streamline Customs and immigration, decreasing passenger processing time and creating an easier, more efficient travel experience in Fiji.
