Day for the fallen

THIRTEEN police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty since September last year were remembered yesterday.

A special remembrance day and thanksgiving service was held in Nasinu by the Fiji Police Force for the 13 officers.

Families and friends of the police officers were part of the event.

“We have sounded the Last Post for our fallen comrades for they have done the good days work in their lives — commemorating their good life and sacrificing it for the better of all,” Police Commissioner Ben Groenewald said.

“On behalf of the police force and the Government of Fiji, I wish to express my appreciation for you, the spouses and loved ones of these brave and dedicated officers for your unwavering support towards these great officers that we are commemorating today.

“For your loved ones, they have fought the good fight, they have finished the race and they kept the faith and ethos of the Fiji Police Force and I believe that there is in store for them the crown of righteousness.”

Mr Groenewald said the bond shared by policing families was special and was often unbreakable.

Shivani Shristi Sharma, sister of late special constable Varun Vishal Sharma said it was an emotional day for them to be part of the Remembrance Day.

“We really appreciate what was done in remembering the 13 policemen that have passed on.

“My brother was a special person and he was kind to everyone and really loved his job. We really miss him,” she said.
