Daveua ruled out

ONE of the country’s finest athletes, Rejieli Daveua, is likely to miss the Commonwealth Games after being dropped by Netball Fiji and the Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s team.

The dual international who won the Fiji Rugby Union best female player of the year award was not included in the Fijiana 7s team after her initial inclusion in the netball extended squad for the Commonwealth Games.

The tough netball defender and Fijiana 7s flyer is, however, being considered by the Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s head coach for the remainder of the World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series.

Tanivula said it was unfortunate to lose a player of Daveua’s calibre.

“I did not include her in my final 18-member team because she had been included in the netball squad,” the former New Zealand 7s rep said.

“I would have loved to have her in my team, but I cannot do much because I have submitted the players’ names to FASANOC.

“I brought her to the Fijiana 7s team and she proved her worth after being named by World Rugby as 7s player rookie of the year last season.”

Daveua started her career in netball and joined 7s rugby a few years ago — joining the Fijiana 7s team to some world 7s tournaments including the Rio Olympics.

She re-joined the Fiji Pearls after the Olympics representing Fiji last year and this year.

She was listed in the extended Fiji Pearls squad for the games.

After failing to make the cut for the games, Tanivula said he would include Daveua in her extended squad for the remainder of the World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series.

“She is a talented player and will be considered for the rest of the series,” Tanivula said.

“It’s up to her which sport she wants to play.

“I brought her to the Fijiana 7s team and I will always support her rugby career.”
