FIJI Crop & Livestock Council (FCLC) chief executive officer Jiu Daunivalu has warned that climate change could accelerate the spread of pests and diseases.

She recently made the comments while addressing participants at the “Independent Dialogue Series in Asia Pacific”.

“Climate change is a major contributor to the increased threats of transboundary plant and animal pests, diseases and invasive species.” she said

Ms Daunivalu added that normally farmers relied on harmful pesticides and chemicals to control pests and diseases, without realizing the harmfull impact on their soil, environment and health risks.

The FCLC through it’s advisory support services has found out that from their close to 30,000 member farmers, particularly women and youths had limited access to information and financial resources with heavy reliance on locally natural resources for their livelihood.

The “Independent Dialogue Series in Asia Pacific” organized by the Asian Farmers Association and the Pacific Island Farmers Organisation Network (PIFON) is part of key preparations for the United Nations Systems Summit 2021 in September.
