Daughter was frightened to speak of alleged rape, mother testifies

THE mother of a girl who was allegedly raped by her grandfather informed the High Court in Suva that her daughter was frightened to tell them what her grandfather had done to her.

She said the accused was close to her three children and as a grandfather, he would treat them with the utmost respect and love.

The woman said a lot of people were at their home outside Suva when the alleged incident took place.

She told the court that nobody had any idea of what had happened, but as a mother, she was able to pick out that her daughter was worried about something.

The court heard that she then asked her quietly if her grandfather had done something to her.

The woman said she and her husband were shocked when they were told by their daughter of what her father-in-law had done.

The man who is standing trial before High Court judge Justice Vincent Perera is charged with three counts of rape, one count of sexual assault and one count of indecently annoying a person.

The alleged incident took place last year.

The trial continues.
