Data is a powerful tool for achieving gender equality, Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Lynda Tabuya said during the official launching of the Fiji Country Gender Assessment (FCGA) report on Monday.

Ms Tabuya said the report would now enable all government agencies, along with partnerships with all relevant stakeholders, to track progress, identify and create evidence-based solutions to barriers that affect women and girls.

This included the establishment of a data steering working group and a peer review committee, both of which played a critical role in the development of the report.

“Each FCGA chapter is a deep dive into the topic, and together, the seven chapters comprise a report of 500 pages,” she said.

“The success of the FCGA in overcoming numerous challenges over the past two years demonstrates the power of partnership, commitment and meaningful collaboration.”

Ms Tabuya thanked the government of New Zealand, individuals and organisations for their generous support and significant role in making the assessment possible.

“The FCGA is a powerful tool that belongs to all Fijian women and girls you as it represents a comprehensive effort to capture your stories, hopes, experiences, your realities, and your contributions.

“As minister, I am committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure that the findings and policy recommendations of this assessment is not just read but also acted upon.”

While officiating at the event, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka said the FCGA was a gift to all women and girls in Fiji as recommendations outlined were expected to inform and improve gender programs and policy making.

“As your Prime Minister, I am committed to working tirelessly to make this a reality,” Mr Rabuka said.

“As we move forward, let us carry the insights and recommendations of the assessment with unwavering conviction and determination.”

The FCGA is a comprehensive report which provides key updated statistics, sex-disaggregated data, analysis across seven critical areas such as education, health, economy, ending violence against all women and girls, women in leadership and decision-making, social norms and environment.
