Damage to crops totals $0.5m

THE value of crops damaged by the recent flood in the North is almost $0.5 million.
In a report from the Northern Emergency Operation Centre, agricultural officers confirmed the total damage stood at $491,653.80.
The report also revealed that $150,389.70 worth of crops were damaged by the floods for the province of Macuata, $195,250 for Bua and $146,014.10 for Cakaudrove.
It also revealed that 129 farmers were affected in Macuata, 163 in Bua and 40 in Cakaudrove.
The total area of farms affected was 106 hectares.
The report revealed that assorted vegetables; cassava, dalo, tobacco, rice and bananas were damaged by the floods.
Meanwhile, the weather has not affected farms and households in Taveuni.
There was no disruption to water supply and roads were clear for use.
As of yesterday, nine evacuation centres remained open in Labasa with 267 occupants.
Out of the 267, 139 are adults, 90 are children and 38 are infants.
Commissioner Northern Jovesa Vocea said the evacuees would clean their houses in the day and returned to the evacuation centres at night.
