More than 1000 households in lockdown areas and squatter settlements in the Central Division as well as Nadi were expected to receive 10 dalo suckers each from yesterday.

Agriculture Minister Dr Mahendra Reddy said this assistance was part of efforts to support the livelihoods of families affected by the COVID-19 virus.

“We are targeting 1892 households within these vulnerable areas for now and trucks will be delivering the dalo suckers as of today (yesterday),” he said.

“Dalo suckers are able to provide you with rourou leaves in four to five weeks’ time.”

He added the ministry had distributed seed packs to 16,229 families at a cost of $129,000.

“We’re continuing with this program, which is now also available for those living outside containment areas, who can now obtain it from their nearest agricultural extension office.”

Dr Reddy urged those living in lockdown areas in the Central Division to call the ministry’s helpline on 1523 if they wished to receive the seed package.

“This work is continuing and we urge all households if you have some free land around your home, you can put it to good use.”
