A 35-YEAR-OLD father of seven was handed an 11 year prison sentence after the High Court in Lautoka found him guilty of raping his 14-year-old cousin in 2010.
The court heard the victim was residing with her stepmother because her biological parents were separated.
The accused, a Lautoka farmer, committed the offence when the victim visited his home.
While delivering the sentence, Justice Aruna Aluthge said the accused exploited the vulnerable victim and breached her trust. The court also heard the accused threatened the victim to keeping the incident a secret, which left her traumatised.
Justice Aluthge said the mitigating factors included the accused’s co-operation with police.
The accused is also the sole breadwinner of his family and earns $50 a week.
Due to his age, number of children and willingness to rehabilitate, Justice Aluthge imposed a non-parole period of eight years.
He has 30 days to appeal.
