Some mothers and babies from the Colonial War Memorial Hospital’s Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit in Suva were transferred to the Lautoka Hospital because of escalating COVID-19 cases at the CWMH.
Health Ministry permanent secretary Dr James Fong confirmed this to The Fiji Times yesterday.
“Yes we are doing that,” he said. “I cannot confirm the numbers but we have activated that contingency protocol.”
The patients were transferred to the Lautoka Hospital early this week.
The Health Ministry said only emergency, dental, radiology and maternity cases were being handled at the Lautoka Hospital and COVID-19 tests would be mandatory for all Fijians admitted at the facility.
The ministry said all patients were required to report to a triage tent on arrival and an oncology nurse would facilitate their admission.
The ministry said the dental department would only provide tooth extraction services for now.
The Lautoka Hospital maternity unit would cater for labouring mothers and antenatal mothers with acute problems.
The ministry said the Medical Services Pacific clinic in Yawini St would only see antenatal high-risk mothers.
For other services, Lautoka residents were encouraged to contact their nearest health centres.
