CUVU College aims to make history in the Super Deans Fiji Secondary Schools Championship by winning the under-18 title this year.

The side went down to Ratu Kadavulevu School 20-0 in the final last year.

Yesterday at Churchill Park in Lautoka, Cuvu College defeated Natabua High School 20-10 in the first round of the western playoffs. Cuvu College led 8-3 at halftime.

Cuvu College U18 team manager Kalesi Qio said the second round of competition for the Western Zone was left before the eliminations.

“We lost to RKS in the final last year so this year our plan is to uplift the bar to the next level,” she said.

“It is a tough competition but time will tell when we finish off with the Western Zone competition.

There will be another round of games and then have the eliminations.

So far it is good for the team because the finalists will qualify for the main quarter-finals and we are on track.”

Ratu Navula College is the lone school from the Western Division to lift the Deans trophy.

RNC took out the title in 2013.

The Deans Trophy has a rich history being played for the first time in 1939 with Queen Victorian School lifting the inaugural title.

QVS went on to defend it for another four years before Lelean Memorial School snatched the title in 1944. Qio said they had 100 per cent support from the Nadroga Rugby Union.

“They have been supporting us from the start,” she said.

“These players will eventually go to represent the Nadroga U19 team next year and they have automatic qualification.

There are many players who have made themselves big in Nadroga rugby.

We are working hard to get that Deans Trophy and are hopeful that more sponsors will come on board to support the team.”
