DIALOGUE Fiji has welcomed the budget’s focus on neglected sectors, such as agriculture.
Executive director Nilesh Lal said it was encouraging to see the budget’s allocation towards the agriculture sector which had been neglected in the past.
“However, it is crucial to ensure that these funds are effectively utilised and do not result in failed initiatives, as we have witnessed in the sector’s history,” Mr Lal said.
“We urge the Government to adopt stringent monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to safeguard against inefficiencies and wastage.”
He also commended the Government’s decision to increase social welfare allowances, particularly in light of the anticipated impact of the rise in VAT on inflation rates.
“Dialogue Fiji welcomes the increase in social welfare allowances, especially considering the potential inflationary effects of the VAT hike.
“To ensure fairness and transparency, it is crucial to establish an inclusive system that utilises objective criteria in the distribution of state benefits.
“By doing so, Fiji can effectively support vulnerable populations and mitigate the potential adverse effects of fiscal adjustments.”
