Lautoka is still not free from the COVID-19 pandemic despite the lifting of the lockdown restriction of the greater Lautoka area at 5am today.

That’s the word from Police Commissioner Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho.

He said with the lockdown lifted, measures implemented across the country in regards to loitering, the ban on social gatherings and the enforcement of the nationwide curfew hours would be vigorously implemented in the Sugar City from today.

“We are getting information from those people in Lautoka that they are free,” he said.

“I want to reiterate that, no, we are not free from the virus including those in the Lautoka lockdown areas.

“We have an area of interest we are looking at and we are waiting for advice from the medical authorities when that will become a more definite or targeted area of interest that we will have to move in and isolate as well within the greater Lautoka area.”

For the lockdown of the greater Suva area, Brig-Gen Qiliho said they had to reassign manpower to the Sawani junction border in Naitasiri to deal with the expected movement in that area.

“The Sawani area is flooded and we understand the issues of moving food items, root crops or vegetables from the upper Naitasiri area up through Sawani.

“We expect that to move across through Qiolevu Rd coming in through Navuso Village Rd, and we have reassigned man-power resources into that area to deal with the expected movement in that area until the water cuts us out.”
