COVID-19 positive patients who are in quarantine are provided with psycho-social support, says Fiji’s Health Ministry permanent secretary Dr James Fong.

He said there were a number of non-governmental organisations the ministry worked with to provide counseling and mental health support.

“Empower Pacific is one of the groups of counselors that we work with as an NGO,” said Dr Fong.

“There are a few more other civil society organisations, a network of them, that we work with.

“They worked with us even during cyclones, during our recovery efforts for TC Yasa and Ana when we had people in those recovery places where we had to put them in.

“They also helped provide psycho-social support and we use the same network to facilitate with regards to those in quarantine.

“Of course we can’t get them to go in person but they do provide zoom services.

“There are doctors who walk around, they make assessments and based on questions that they ask, they highlight those who require psycho-social support.”
