Fiji’s Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has publicly commended all health and essential services workers on the frontline of fighting the war against COVID-19 in the country.
Mr Bainimarama said those Fijian workers were “our heroes”.
“In Fiji, our heroes are usually found on the rugby field, that’s how we described our 7s champions in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro – that’s how we saw them when they stood proudly to accept their gold medals as the Fijian national anthem played over Brazil,” PM Bainimarama said.
“But as the COVID-19 pandemic has derailed plans for the 2020 Games in Tokyo resulting in their postponement until next year, a new kind of hero is emerging as the pride of Fiji – our healthcare heroes.
“They’re not just scoring tries, they’re saving lives.
“These heroes – our doctors, our nurses, our disciplined forces, our healthcare staff are our frontline soldiers in Fiji’s war against the coronavirus.
“Day in and day out they don their gowns, face masks and goggles in isolation wards in hospitals in Fiji and fever clinics putting their lives and the wellbeing of others before their own in the campaign to lockdown the coronavirus.”
Mr Bainimarama said those workers deserved every measure of our discipline and vigilance to stop the spread of the virus.
