A four-year-old boy is the latest COVID-19 fatality in Fiji.

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services reported the toddler had been admitted to the CWM Hospital in respiratory distress on August 24.

The young boy died a few hours later despite efforts by the attending clinicians to save him.

Ministry permanent secretary Dr James Fong said the deceased was not vaccinated because he did not belong to the vaccine-eligible group.

There have been a total of 177 COVID-19 deaths recorded since December 2021.

Meanwhile, the ministry reported 37 new positive cases on Monday.

Dr Fong said 12 of those new cases were recorded on August 26, four cases were recorded the day after, one on August 28, and 20 new cases were recorded as of 8am on Monday, August 29.

He said of the 37 cases recorded, 10 cases were recorded in the Central Division and 27 cases in the Western Division.

The Central Division cases constitute 66 per cent of the cumulative total cases nationally, with the Western Division making up 28 per cent, 4 per cent in the Northern Division, and 2 per cent in the Eastern Division.
