Fiji has reported a drastic drop in COVID-19 infections with 264 new cases reported for the 24-hour period that ended at 8am today.
Ministry of Health and Medical Services permanent secretary Dr James Fong said 131 cases were from the Western Division and 133 cases from the Central Division.
Dr Fong also reported 10 COVID deaths for the period July 30 to August 10, all reported ion the Central Division.
Five of the deaths occurred at home and four of the deceased persons were not vaccinated.
The other five deaths were reported to have presented at hospitals in severe respiratory distress, and died in admission.
Dr Fong said there had been 257 new recoveries reported since the last update, which meant that there were now 24,414 active cases.
He said 18,948 of those active cases were in the Central Division and 5446 active cases in the Western Division.
There have been 37,776 cases recorded during the outbreak that started in April 2021.
Fiji has recorded a total of 37,846 cases since the first case was reported in March 2020, with 12,934 recoveries.
Dr Fong also reported three more deaths of COVID-19 positive patients.
However, he said those deaths had been classified as non-COVID deaths by their doctors who had determined their deaths were caused by serious pre-existing medical conditions and not COVID-19.
There have now been 327 deaths due to COVID-19 in Fiji, with 325 of those deaths recorded during the outbreak that started in April this year.
