Fijian Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says he is of the belief that any civil servant or any employee of government statutory or commercial companies who breach COVID-19 restrictions should be dismissed.

In his public statement on Tuesday, Mr Bainimarama made this comment as he noted his extreme disappointment when he learnt that a civil servant was arrested last weekend for a curfew violation.

He noted parliament’s approval of a 20 per cent pay cut for MPs, a decision to show their solidarity with Fijians suffering from the pandemic’s economic ramifications.

“We did so because we were prepared to lead by example and with compassion. We did so, because when Fijians look to me and other elected officials they deserve to see examples worth striving to follow,” Mr Bainimarama said.

“That same level of responsibility applies to any member of any organisation funded by the taxpayers of Fiji.

“Let’s remember, no civil servant or any employee of statutory bodies and government-owned commercial companies has received a pay cut.

“Let’s also remember, these Fijians are mandated by the Constitution to adhere to high standards of professionalism and integrity, and faithfully implement Fiji’s laws.

“That is why I believe if any of these Fijians are convicted of violating our health protection directives, they should be dismissed.”
