The Fiji Trades Union Congress has said: “Government is telling workers to fend for themselves”.

FTUC general secretary Felix Anthony made the comments in reaction to the COVID-19 Supplementary Budget.

The Government announced workers who had either lost their jobs or had their hours reduced could withdraw from their Fiji National Provident Fund retirement.

“This is a Government that is telling workers to fend for themselves by withdrawing from their own retirement fund in these difficult times, yet make it look like it is Government assistance,” Mr Anthony said.

“It is time for the Government to take its finger out of the FNPF pie and not treat FNPF as its cash cow.”

He says the FNPF is workers’ capital and “workers must have a say in its operations”.

“It is interesting that the Government makes an announcement on FNPF when the Board of FNPF is charged with the responsibility of its operations.”
