The man charged in relation to the stabbing of another inside a vehicle outside a Suva supermarket on Tuesday asked the Suva Magistrate’s Court if the matter could be settled out of court.
Bi Baodang was produced before Resident Magistrate Indula Ratnayake last Friday, charged with one count of attempted murder.
Mr Baodang told the court it was an issue between two Chinese people outside of court.
He said his alleged offence, stabbing the owner of the fishing vessel he lived and worked on, would be seen as an accidental injury in China.
Mr Ratnayake said it was not possible for them to settle out of court as it was a criminal offence and charges had already been filed by the police.
He also said it was a criminal offence in Fiji and because it happened in Fiji, Fijian law would apply.
Mr Baodang expressed concern about his case, as he did not speak any other language apart from mandarin and would not be able to communicate with lawyers.
He said he was having difficulties working in Fiji and just wanted to return to China and did not want the case to be going on.
The police prosecutor objected to bail on the grounds that it was an indictable offence and the accused was still living aboard the fishing vessel, owned by the victim who was still admitted at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital.
Mr Ratnayake transferred the matter to the High Court and told Mr Baodang he could file a notice of alibi within 14 days.
The matter will be called in the High Court on August 19.
The accused was remanded in custody.
