“YOU waited until your partner was away then you preyed on the victim.”

This was the comment of Suva High Court Judge Justice Chamath Morais when sentencing a 24-year-old stepfather convicted of a count each of rape, attempt to commit rape and sexual assault to seven years, nine months and 15 days imprisonment.

The court heard that the man raped his 20-year-old stepdaughter on March 16, 2017 in Navua.

Justice Morais said these incidents had left a lasting effect on the victim.

He adds that the court must protect women and children from such offences and trauma.

“Children are the future and society cannot condone any such offences against children,” Justice Morais said.

A non-parole period of five years, nine months and 15 days has been set.
